Jane & Serge. A Family Album

The highly public love affair of French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg and British actress Jane Birkin captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation. The moment Jane and Serge met on a movie set in 1968, sparks flew. They would spend the next 12 years together, a passionate union that produced the controversial duet "Je t’aime... moi non plus" (whose explicit lyrics and orgasmic moans caused so much fuss that the Vatican declared it offensive) and, in 1971, the legendary album Melody Nelson as well as a daughter, Charlotte, who has become a successful actress in her own right. From the earliest days of Jane and Serge's romance until their split in 1980, Jane’s brother Andrew Birkin was a frequent presence in their lives; an avid photographer, he snapped thousands of candid family photos during those years. Birkin’s pictures—very few of which have ever been published—offer a rare view of daily life for the couple, bringing us back to a place and time we have long idolized. Though more than 30 years have passed since the two parted ways, and over two decades since Serge parted from this world, the passion for Jane and Serge has endured. This treasure trove is sure to fan the flames of its undying embers.

Byrne, Six Books of Euclid

Red, yellow, blue – and of course black – are the colours that Oliver Byrne employs for the figures and diagrams in his most unusual 1847 edition of Euclid, published by William Pickering and printed by Chiswick Press, and which prompt the surprised reader to think of Mondrian. The author makes it clear in his subtitle that this is a didactic measure intended to distinguish his edition from all others: "The Elements of Euclid in which coloured diagrams and symbols are used instead of letters for the greater ease of learners." Byrne is not content to trust solely in the supposed intuitive "logical" structure of Euclid's axioms and theorems – who doesn't know the first famous sentences of Euclid's Elements: "I. A point is that which has no parts. II. A line is length without breadth"? –, but translates them into colourful diagrams and symbols. He thereby thinks in terms of the school classroom: he compares his colours to the dyed chalks in which figures are drawn on the blackboard.

Steve Schapiro, Taxi Driver

Taxi Driver has long been regarded as a cinematic milestone, and Robert DeNiro's portrait of a near-psychotic loner gunman is widely believed to be one of the greatest performances ever filmed. Time magazine includes the film in its list of 100 Greatest Movies, saying: "The power of Scorsese's filmmaking grows ever more punishing with the passage of time."

Steve Schapiro—whose photographs were featured in TASCHEN's Godfather Family Album—was the special photographer on the set of Taxi Driver, capturing the film's iconic moments and actors behind the scenes. This book features hundreds of images selected from Schapiro's archives, offering fans a trip back in time to witness the making of Scorsese's masterpiece.

The Book of Conversations

The Book of Conversations includes photographers Rankin, Julia Fullerton-Batten, Guido Argentini and Andreas Smetana. Mark Porter, Creative Director of The Guardian, James Sommerville, Co-founder of The Attik, Illustrators Aardman Animations (Creators of Wallace & Gromit), eBoy, Faiyaz Jafri, and Gary Taxali. And many creatives from Advertising Agencies around the world: Weiden+Kennedy, The Glue Society Sydney, TBWA, Madre Buenos Aires, Strawberry Frog New York and JWT Tokyo.

The Book of Conversations is a collection of questions, each one a conversation starter. It’s the intrigue of exploring someone and discovering what lies beneath. Some questions are deep, some trivial and some you will never forget.

However, just words were not enough. Images provoke people in ways that words sometimes can’t. 120 artists, graphic designers, creative directors, art directors, photographers, illustrators and animators were approached and were each given a question.

Their task was to provoke this question with an image. The image could make the reader cry, shout, laugh or think. But most importantly, it should get them to talk.

Along with the support from all the contributors, part of the proceeds from this book will go towards benefiting three children’s charities. Warchild.org, globalfundforchildren.org and soschildrensvillages.org.uk.

Shulman Portfolio #12 - Kaufman House

Limited edition of 60 Silver Gelatin prints (Ilford MGD 44 M' "Pearl"), numbered, titled and individually signed by Julius Shulman, mounted under plexiglass in black frames, 75,5 x 60 cm (29.7 x 23.6 in.), released in 1999.

Julius Shulman
American photographer Julius Shulman's images of Californian architecture have burned themselves into the retina of the 20th century. A book on modern architecture without Shulman is inconceivable. Some of his architectural photographs, like the iconic shots of Frank Lloyd Wright's or Pierre Koenig's remarkable structures, have been published countless times. The brilliance of buildings like those by Charles Eames, as well as those of his close friend, Richard Neutra, was first brought to light by Shulman's photography.

The clarity of his work demanded that architectural photography had to be considered as an independent art form. Each Shulman image unites perception and understanding for the buildings and their place in the landscape. The precise compositions reveal not just the architectural ideas behind a building's surface, but also the visions and hopes of an entire age. A sense of humanity is always present in his work, even when the human figure is absent from the actual photographs.

Today, a great many of the buildings documented by Shulman have disappeared or been crudely converted, but the thirst for his pioneering images is stronger than ever before.

Oscar Niemeyer

Oscar Niemeyer, the last surviving father of Modernist architecture, rose to prominence at Le Corbusier’s side but ultimately swerved from the hard, straight lines of orthodox Modernism. Instead he forged a parallel track that mimics the crescendos and denouements of human feeling through swooping curves, graceful arches, and sensuous lines. Using reinforced concrete, he has elevated the everyday to the sublime. Assouline is proud to present the limited edition Oscar Niemeyer, the most complete and lavish exploration of his 101-year life and career. Sketches and original photography, alongside contributions from Tadao Ando, Santiago Calatrava, Frank Gehry, and Zaha Hadid, affirm Niemeyer’s considerable and continuing influence on twentieth and twenty-first-century architecture.

Christopher Wool

His painting spells TRBL: Christopher Wool's stark and beautiful art

Covering all work phases in large-scale reproductions and accompanied by extensive texts as well as production Polaroids and installation photos by Wool himself. Limited to 1,000 copies, each numbered and signed by the artist. Also available in an Art Edition, limited to 100 copies and with an original artwork by Christopher Wool.

In-your-face, achingly simple, deceptively frank, the work of Christopher Wool is so very New York. Though he owes a debt to abstract expressionism and pop art, he completely transcends—even demolishes—these genres. Whether it’s a text-based painting or an abstract spray-painted piece, his work is immediately engaging. Wool questions painting, like many other artists in his generation, but he doesn’t provide any easy answers. “The harder you look the harder you look,” as he titled one of his word paintings, is an excellent example of how he states the obvious whilst provoking us to think deeper about what seems obvious.

Christopher Wool became known in the mid-1980s through allover paintings produced with rubber rollers commonly used to simulate decorative wallpaper patterns on walls. By 1988 he had hit stride with his dry, dead-pan word paintings (“Trbl,” “Riot,” “Sell the House, Sell the Car, Sell the Kids”), while continuing to explore the possibilities of pattern painting. Since the 1990s, he has been developing the painterly qualities of his work, using a mostly black-and-white palette, starting from abstract lines drawn with a spray gun or layered stock images, overpainting silkscreens on linen, wiping out images, with a widening variety of media, a process that can involve photography, silkscreen, and, in the new millennium, also the computer.

Exploring Wool’s work in close to 500 pages, this monograph is exhaustive in scope and depth. All work phases are covered in large-scale reproductions and accompanied by production Polaroids and installation photos by Wool himself. Editor Hans Werner Holzwarth has previously collaborated on several catalogs and artist’s books with Wool. Essays and analyses by Glenn O’Brien, Jim Lewis, Ann Goldstein, Anne Pontégnie, Richard Hell, and Eric Banks make this book a great read as well as a definitive study of the story so far.

HAGGADAH SPECIAL EDITION

HAGGADAH SPECIAL EDITION is richly illustrated by Gerard Garouste, a leading name in contemporary French painting. Garouste’s illustrations are inspired by the historic stories told in the Haggadah, written by Marc-Alain Ouaknin, professor and author of several books on Judaism.

But Haggadah is more than a book, it is a practical guide that follows the order of the Seder ceremony. This edition includes all the instructions in English and Hebrew text necessary to carry out a successful celebration in the traditional atmosphere of the event, and invites celebrants to challenge their intelligence, taste and spirituality.

The Haggadah is the text for the Jewish ceremonial dinner, known as the Seder, which takes place on the first night of Passover. The festival commemorates one of the fundamental moments of Jewish history: the end of bondage in Egypt and the Exodus over 3,500 years ago.
