Norman Mailer, MoonFire: The Epic Journey of Apollo 11

"And the Moon came nearer..." The Epic Journey of Apollo 11

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 Moon landing, TASCHEN has paired Norman Mailer’s seminal text with spectacular photography—from the archives of NASA, LIFE magazine, and many other sources—to create a unique tribute to the defining scientific mission of our time.

It has been called the single most historic event of the 20th century: On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins met John F. Kennedy's call for a manned Moon landing by the end of the 1960s. A decade of tests and training, a staff of 400,000 engineers and scientists, a budget of $24 billion, and the most powerful rocket ever launched all combined in an unprecedented event watched by millions the world over. And no one captured the men, the mood, and the machinery like Norman Mailer.

One of the greatest writers of the 20th Century, Norman Mailer was hired by LIFE in 1969 to cover the Moon shot. His three-part feature was the longest nonfiction piece LIFE had published. He enhanced and extended his reportage with deeper reflection in the brilliantly crafted book, Of a Fire on the Moon, excerpted here for the first time. Equally adept at examining the science of space travel and the psychology of the men involved—from Saturn V rocket engineer Wernher von Braun, to the crucial NASA support staff, to the three astronauts—Mailer provides provocative and trenchant insights into this epoch-making event.

Illustrating this volume are hundreds of the best photographs and maps from the NASA vaults, magazine archives, and private collections. Many of them previously unpublished, these images document the development of the agency and the mission, life inside the command module and on the Moon’s surface, and the world’s jubilant reaction to the landing. This edition includes an original introduction by Colum McCann and captions by leading Apollo 11 experts, explaining the history and science behind the images, citing the mission log and publications of the day, and post-flight astronaut interviews.

Annoushka jewellery

Annoushka Collection is now available at Harvey Nichols. The culmination of a lifetime's obsession with the romance and sensual magic of jewels, Annoushka Ducas' new jewellery collection is inspired by her extensive travels and fuelled by a collector's passion for the exotic and unique. Further shaped by Annoushka's Russian heritage and hand-crafted using both traditional and modern jewellery techniques, this playful collection celebrates the character, sensuality and strength of jewellery, as a unique reflection of the individual modern woman.

The Annoushka collection is built on the philosophy that jewellery is designed to be worn. This practical emphasis on individual style has given birth to the Annoushka "Parure", a modern and intensely personal jewellery wardrobe, arranged in a deftly-designed jewellery box, with compartments, hidden sections and secret drawers, creating a suite of jewels which reflect women's tastes and character. Conceived to innovate, reshape and reinvent, Annoushka's jewellery is designed to inspire women to do the same - to explore and discover their own personal style, trying new combinations of colour, proportion and texture to create a unique jewellery wardrobe.

The flagship Annoushka boutique is now open on the Ground Floor of Harvey Nichols Knightsbridge and will be followed by Harvey Nichols Leeds on 12 August and Harvey Nichols Manchester on 15 August.

Shulman Portfolio #12 - Kaufman House

Limited edition of 60 Silver Gelatin prints (Ilford MGD 44 M' "Pearl"), numbered, titled and individually signed by Julius Shulman, mounted under plexiglass in black frames, 75,5 x 60 cm (29.7 x 23.6 in.), released in 1999.

Julius Shulman
American photographer Julius Shulman's images of Californian architecture have burned themselves into the retina of the 20th century. A book on modern architecture without Shulman is inconceivable. Some of his architectural photographs, like the iconic shots of Frank Lloyd Wright's or Pierre Koenig's remarkable structures, have been published countless times. The brilliance of buildings like those by Charles Eames, as well as those of his close friend, Richard Neutra, was first brought to light by Shulman's photography.

The clarity of his work demanded that architectural photography had to be considered as an independent art form. Each Shulman image unites perception and understanding for the buildings and their place in the landscape. The precise compositions reveal not just the architectural ideas behind a building's surface, but also the visions and hopes of an entire age. A sense of humanity is always present in his work, even when the human figure is absent from the actual photographs.

Today, a great many of the buildings documented by Shulman have disappeared or been crudely converted, but the thirst for his pioneering images is stronger than ever before.
