9-light stainless steel candelabra by David Mellor

    POST A COMMENT

David Mellor, the eponymous founder of this illustrious British company, was one of the most important designers of the 20th century. Now, as creative director, his son Corin promises to exalt his name still further with distinctive designs of his own like this exceptional 9-light stainless steel candelabra. Based on the famous Advent wreath candelabra he was commissioned to create for Sheffield cathedral in 2007, the piece is a constructional tour de force. Consisting of 32 slim vertical bars in stainless steel, the eight candleholders radiate out from the central stem encircling a ninth candleholder set at a higher level. The striking decorative detail is the mass of coloured rings in anodized aluminum, offset by plain white candles. In all there are 380 separate handmade components in the work. The polished metal structure of the candelabrum rises from a solid matt black granite base which bears the engraving O LUX BEATISSIMA (‘O most blessed light’) lettered in Eric Gill’s beautiful Perpetua font. Made and hand-assembled by their skilled craftsmen in David Mellor’s famous ‘Round Building’ HQ in Derbyshire’s Peak District, this piece has been created by Corin exclusively for 20ltd.com and is available in only 6 editions of each size.

    Mercedes S600 Pullman Guard

    POST A COMMENT

Mercedes-Benz has announced a prestigious new luxury limousine for use by government leaders, captains of industry and royalty – the S 600 Pullman Guard with integrated Highest Protection. The latest in a long and unique tradition of large, armoured, prestige limousines from the world’s oldest automaker, this model also marks a special anniversary for the Stuttgart-based firm: 80 years of manufacturing vehicles with factory-integrated special protection.

Like the famously luxurious and spacious open-plan Pullman railway coaches after which it is named, the new S 600 Pullman Guard treats its occupants to a traveling environment characterized by generous accommodation and the highest comfort. The vehicle owes its remarkably spacious interior to its 4315-millimetre wheelbase (115 centimetres longer than that of the long version of the special-protection S-Class). Indeed, with an overall length of 6356 millimetres, the S 600 Pullman Guard is a vehicle of truly majestic proportions which offers its passengers not only a maximum of comfort, but also a superbly appointed setting for discreet meetings, equipped, of course, with all the key communications and entertainment systems. This ensures they are always able to remain fully in touch with the rest of the world while enjoying the luxury and comfort of their own very special place in it.

Jean Nouvel by Jean Nouvel. Complete Works 1970-2008

    POST A COMMENT

The 2008 Pritzker Prize winner explores his career to date

The work of France's most unique and internationally celebrated contemporary architect in a book designed by the master himself. Limited to 1,000 signed and numbered copies packaged in a translucent plexiglass slipcase reminiscent of the translucent facades often seen in Jean Nouvel designs.

Recipient of the 2008 Pritzker Prize, Jean Nouvel is without any doubt France’s most original and important contemporary architect. From 1967 to 1970, he was an assistant of the influential architects Claude Parent and Paul Virilio, then creating his own office in Paris. His first widely acclaimed project was the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (1981–87, with Architecture Studio). Since then he has completed the Lyon Opera House (1986–93), the Euralille Shopping Center, Lille (1991–94), and the Fondation Cartier, Paris (1991–94). His major completed projects since 2000 include the Culture and Convention Center in Lucerne, Switzerland (1998–2000), the spectacular Agbar Tower on Barcelona’s Diagonal Avenue (2001–03), the extension of the Reina Sofia Museum, (Madrid, 1999–2005), the Quai Branly Museum on the Seine in Paris (2001–06), and the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Apart from receiving this year’s Pritzker Prize, Jean Nouvel won the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Gold Medal in 2001.

Jean Nouvel worked for five years with author Philip Jodidio on this prodigiously illustrated TASCHEN monograph, a book that will finally give the full measure of the architect’s talent. Two 400-page hardcover volumes give the most complete overview to date of Jean Nouvel’s career, including works in progress, such as the new Louvre in Abu Dhabi, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the extension of the MoMA in New York. The book’s graphic design and images were conceived and selected by the architect; in addition, the transparent printed dust jackets mimic the architect’s own tendency to play with contrasts and overlaid patterns. One can truly say that this publication is Nouvel by Nouvel, inside and out.
